Wight Shipyard Company and SMS – “It’s coming home”

The UK based Wight Shipyard Company and its sister company SMS are proudly backing England in their soccer world cup bid by making a truly exceptional public statement.

The Columbine Building in Cowes currently sports the largest Union Jack image in the world. This Union Jack motif has today proudly been replaced with England’s famous St George’s cross and the iconic words “It’s Coming Home”.

The Wight Shipyard Co. and SMS are owned by Sir Charles Dunstone and Peter Morton.

Peter Morton, group chief executive officer, says: “The Wight Shipyard and SMS are proudly British businesses.

“We’ve built several high speed craft for Red Funnel and several for MBNA Thames Clippers.

“We’ve a full order book – British built, British engineering, best of British workmanship – and genuinely globally recognised and tremendously well respected.

“We’re building world class vessels right here in Cowes and completing world class superyacht refits in Southampton.

“Changing the flag to the traditional St George’s cross is as much about the football as it is Brexit and UK Plc. ‘It’s coming home’ – the world cup seems the perfect opportunity to raise our profile and stand up and be counted.  Come on boys – bring it home.”

Peter adds: “The entire country is behind our lads in Russia and in some way anything that we can do to add encouragement and enthusiasm is a ‘no brainer’.

“We’re all backing England, Cowes is backing England – and we of course wish the team the very best for tomorrow night’s game.  Football is coming home”.

The Wight Shipyard is part of a collection of British companies run by Peter focused on the UK marine industry.

The Group is made up of the Wight Shipyard Co. and AMC – specialists in new build fast ferries and windfarm support vessels. SMS is built around ship repair and refits in the commercial marine, defence, and Superyacht sectors – and Yacht Tec and Global Services are experts in the supply of cranes, passerelles and procurement services to the Superyacht industry.
