Christmas Canal Camp in the Cotswolds

A Five-Day Working Holiday for just £70 per person

If you enjoy spending time outdoors and are looking to do something different this festive season, why not take a look at the Inland Waterways Association’s Waterway Recovery Group ‘Christmas Canal Camp’ in the picturesque Cotswolds?

Running from 26 December, 2018 to 1 January, 2019 and costing just £70 per person for the five-day working holiday, IWA is offering volunteers an opportunity to help restore the canal at Whitminster, near Brimscombe Port, just outside Stroud, Gloucestershire.

The cost includes three meals a day – a cooked breakfast, lunch on site and a substantial home cooked evening meal, plus an endless supply of tea and cake. Accommodation is in an old office building, which once housed Damian Hirst’s studio – and perhaps his formaldehyde tanks! There is electricity, hot showers and heating, but volunteers need to bring their own camp bed or sleeping mat. All transfers to and from the accommodation to the work site is included but volunteers will need to make their own way to Brimscombe Port. If travelling by public transport, volunteers can be collected from Stroud railway station.

The Canal Camps are ideal for anyone who is willing to get stuck in, enjoys a challenge and wants to do something worthwhile as 2018 draws to an end.  It is hard work, but there’s plenty of fun and a real sense of camaraderie among the volunteers. No experience is needed and all personal protection equipment is provided. All you need is a pair of steel toe cap boots, warm clothes and waterproofs.

The canal redevelopment at Brimscombe Port is part of a wider £35 million regeneration of the canal which will see new homes, businesses and leisure facilities. Once completed, there will be significant economic benefits to the region.
