Gordon Maguire Wins Australian Championship

Australian Champion Ichi Ban’s cockpit and deck layout is notably austere. There’s no comfort of steering wheels in the TP52 for helmsman Gordon Maguire. He controls with a long tiller and an even longer tiller extension, and on every tack has to get himself and this paraphernalia swiftly across the wide cockpit to a minimal perch on the new weather side.

December’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Race 2017 overall winner Gordon Maguire, originally of Howth and now sailing master of Matt Allen’s TP52 Ichi Ban in Australia, simply keeps on winning writes W M Nixon.

Gordon Maguire, overall winner of the recent Sydney-Hobart Race, had continued on top form with eight wins in eight races in the Australian Championship.

The Australia Yachting Championship on Port Philip Bay saw Maguire record eight wins in eight races when the series concluded on Sunday, a result which was particularly sweet for owner Matt Allen – the President of Australian Sailing started his own sailing career at Sandringham, host port for this important week of racing.
