Sea-faring charity celebrates double hundred
The Southampton-based Sailors’ Society, the world’s oldest maritime welfare charity, is celebrating its 200th anniversary.
The organisation was founded in London in 1818 to support destitute seafarers returning home from the Napoleonic Wars.
It now supports the world’s 1.6 million seafarers through crises like piracy, kidnapping and abandonment.
