Setting Sail: Crew Board launches to simplify yacht recruitment
Crew Board, a new yacht recruitment platform based in Manchester, has announced it will be launching in November. The company, which makes use of industry-leading technology, aims to simplify and improve the process of matching yacht crew with open roles.
The platform allows employers – yacht owners and captains – to review, filter, and progress candidates along each stage of the recruitment process in a much clearer way than existing solutions provide. Crew Board will also make use of an advanced ‘best-match’ algorithm to analyse crew profiles and auto-shortlist the best pool of potential candidates or, for employees, suitable jobs.
Furthermore, the team behind the web-based app will be personally vetting each and every crew profile. The aim is to create a database of high-quality, serious candidates for every position, regardless of prior experience.
“As a recruiter and former crew member, I understand how difficult it can be to match the perfect crew with the perfect yacht,” says founder and Managing Director, Chay Hodgson. “Yacht recruitment can be a difficult and drawn-out process, but Crew Board’s exclusive database and intuitive user interface will make it so much easier to fill any role, from Captains to Stewards. We are very excited to share it with the yachting community.”
With approximately 4,700 superyachts across the globe and 150 new vessels setting sail each year, the industry is growing at a rapid rate, meaning the demand for crew at all levels is constantly increasing. Traditional recruitment solutions can make this extremely costly for yacht owners and captains, who typically pay placement fees for each crew member found by an agency. The more senior the position, the higher the placement fee.
As an alternative, Crew Board’s low-cost subscription model means yacht owners and captains will have constant access to an exclusive pool of candidates for every potential position onboard, therefore removing the middleman and saving yachts thousands. Crew will also be able to actively search a database of open roles and apply with a single click.
For crew, creating a profile on Crew Board is completely free, whilst for employers the platform is available to trial for up to six months. Furthermore, in an effort to remove the barriers “green crew” face whilst looking for a first job in the industry, employers can post junior roles for free, forever.
“The demand for crew has never been higher and it’s only set to increase in the future, so employers will need a more cost-effective and efficient recruitment solution”, says Chay. “We’re hoping our platform will aid the growth of the industry, along with helping younger, less experienced crew to find their dream role.”

About Crew Board
Coming out of Manchester’s burgeoning tech startup scene, Crew Board was founded in 2018 by Managing Director, Chay Hodgson.
Chay is an ex-yachtie with years of experience working for a leading yacht recruitment agency. Taking everything he has learnt both as a young crew member looking for work and, more recently, as a recruiter helping yachts to fill positions, Chay hopes to bring yacht recruitment into the digital age.
The new startup leans on innovative technology and manual vetting to improve the yacht job search for both employers and employees.
- The platform will launch to the public in November
- Every crew member joining the platform is manually vetted by the Crew Board team, ensuring a high quality database for employers
- An advanced ‘best match’ algorithm powers the platform, helping crew find roles that better suit their experiences and yachts find crew that better suit their demands
- Crew Board is completely free for crew, and there’s a six month free trial for yachts
