Tom Rogers won a RIB and a Honda BF50 engine for his club

Tom Rogers, aged 14, was at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club on Saturday 28 October to receive a brand new 460 Highfield RIB with a Honda BF50 engine on behalf of the club.

The RIB was the sought after prize that Tom won when he triumphed in the senior 13-16 age group at the National Final of the 2017 Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship held at TheYachtmarket.com Southampton Boat Show on 17 September.

The keys to the RIB were presented to Dunlop Stewart, Commodore of the Yacht Club by Andrew Norton, The RYA’s Powerboat Projects Manager, during a ceremony at the club.

“I am so pleased to have won the RIB for the Club,” said Tom. “This will make a fantastic addition for on-the-water support to the club’s dinghies.”

Tom went on to thank Honda and Highfield for organising the Championship around the country.

Tom had to fight his way to the Final via a wi at the Honda Youth RIB Southern Regional Championship before going head to head with other top RIB driving teenagers from around the country.

“This is a brilliant achievement by Tom,” commented the Commodore. “All the hard work in training and practice has paid off. The RIB will be put to very good use training the youngsters in the Club.”

During the annual Championship each of the young competitors has to skilfully manoeuvre around tricky and testing course including a slalom, stopping and reversing around a mark and a blast to the finish line.

The Southern Region champion in the younger division the 8-12 age group, was also from Lymington. Henry Wood, aged 11 hinted at a lot of promise for future Championships as he took a worthy 4th at the National Finals.

Now in its 16th year, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship, sponsored by Honda and Highfield, is a National Championship that takes place between May and September each year. Competitors aged 8 – 16 participate in a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) to demonstrate their skills at the helm with the goal of winning a Highfield 460 or a Honwave T40 for their club.

The Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is Britain’s leading programme introducing kids to powerboats and training them to be safe, proficient drivers and excellent boat handlers. RIBs are light, manoeuvrable craft and the boats driven in the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship can hit speeds of up to 25mph.
