Torqeedo extends range of portable electric outboards

Torqeedo has added the Travel 603 to its line-up of portable electric outboards, the lightest and most affordable electric outboard in its range.

The two-horsepower-equivalent, direct-drive, short shaft motor is, the company says, the lightest in its power class, weighing 15.5kg, including the battery.

Like its Travel 1103, the Travel 603 is ethically manufactured in Germany and features a built-in high-performance lithium-ion battery rated at 500w, which boasts individually welded steel safety cells with Torqeedo’s proprietary five-stage safety system.

The company says that on a single charge the battery has a five and a half hour cruising capacity at slow speeds and it floats in the event it’s accidentally dropped overboard. The Travel 603 is supplied with a plug-in charger or it can be charged directly from a boat’s 12 or 24-volt supply. Solar charging is also possible though the integrated solar charge controller built into every Travel battery.

An onboard computer with GPS built into the Travel motor, provides instant readouts of operating range at current RPMs, battery charge status and other critical safety information. With Torqeedo’s TorqTrac mobile app, all this vital information can be viewed on a smartphone or tablet.

“Our goal in introducing the Travel 603 is to make it easier for boaters to discover the unique benefits of clean, green electric propulsion for smaller craft. There’s nothing quite like the experience of gliding silently through the water with no odours or exhaust fumes,” says Dr Ralf Plieninger, Torqeedo’s managing director.

Torqeedo also offers a variety of Travel accessories, including a weedless propeller and a remote throttle that allows operation of the motor from the helm station instead of the outboard arm.
