Half Million take virtual escape to iconic islands

Over half a million people take a virtual escape to Scotland’s coasts and islands.

Sail Scotland has announced its record-breaking virtual reality drone filmed videos have been viewed over half a million times across social media channels.

Eight iconic coastal locations featured in the videos have been viewed over 524,000 times. The videos are in 360-degree format (use the arrows in the circle to view up, down, left and right).

The films include flying high above the sea cliffs at St Kilda and soaring with the Puffins on Staffa. The top viewed video features one of Scotland’s most iconic and stunning anchorages at Loch Scavaig that sits under the brooding Cullin mountains of Skye.

The videos were filmed with support from Sail Scotland members, VisitScotland Marketing Growth Fund and in partnership with National Trust for Scotland, Diageo and Calmac.

“In what has been a really challenging year for commercial sailing operators we are over the moon with the consumer reaction to the videos,” says Alan Rankin CEO at Sail Scotland. “Many of the locations feature on personal ‘bucket lists’ and we are pleased that through these videos viewers can escape to these great outdoor places and perhaps tempt them to plan a visit in the future.”
