New careers video to promote working on water

A new careers video, produced by British Marine Scotland, is set to encourage young people to think about the varied, exciting and rewarding career options available across the marine industry. This is part of a programme, from the regional association within British Marine, to promote skills, training and careers within the leisure and small commercial marine sector in Scotland.

The new careers video, which was part funded by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise, focuses on young people working in a marina, in boat building and repair, on a passenger boat and on Scotland’s canal network and highlights the wide variety of work and high levels of job satisfaction available. British Marine Scotland member, Cruise Loch Lomond, is one of the businesses featured in the video and co-owner, Fred Moore commented: “We were delighted to help with filming for the video. Marine tourism in Scotland is booming and we need to ensure young people are encouraged to join and develop the industry for the future.”

The videos have been warmly welcomed by the Scottish Government and Parliament. Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs commented: “There are some excellent career opportunities available in Scotland’s commercial marine sector. I’m pleased to see British Marine Scotland taking steps to encourage young people to explore the many and varied options open to them.”

This sentiment was echoed by Stuart McMillan MSP, Convenor of the Scottish Parliament’s Recreational Boating and Marine Tourism Cross Party Group and MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, who added: “A recent estimate published by the Scottish Government shows the value of the industry to Scotland – that in 2015 marine recreation and tourism contributed £485 million in GVA to the Scottish economy and employed 29,500 workers. This video is another example of how British Marine and businesses within the sector are working to ensure we have skilled people to grow the industry even further.”

British Marine Scotland Chairman, Simon Limb, who is the Manager of Clyde Marina concluded: “Scotland’s leisure and small commercial marine sector offers opportunities for people to turn their passion for boating into a career, but you don’t need to love sailing to work in the industry. There is a huge variety of jobs available, all offering career progression and job satisfaction, as highlighted by all the participants in this video.”
