OMS named as technical supplier for SP80 project

Ocean Marine Systems (OMS) has been named as a technical supplier for the Swiss SP80 project.

OMS is working to develop and supply lightweight hydraulic cylinders that will help the SP80 project in its aim to reach 80 knots using wind as its sole source of power, breaking the current record which stands at 65.45 knots.

“We are delighted to be named as a technical supplier in a project that will see a 100m stretch of water covered in just 2.43 seconds,” comments Mark Barwell, sales director for OMS. “The road to 80 knots is a real challenge and OMS is delighted to be onboard for the journey.”

“OMS’ abilities to offer custom designs and to manufacture all products inhouse are huge assets in developing the specific hydraulic solutions that we need for our boat,” says Mayeul van den Broek, co-founder of SP80. “We are very pleased to benefit from the technical expertise of the OMS team on this quest to break the world sailing speed record!”

Using the principles of sailing, kitesurfing and engineering, the boat is currently in build and is set to be launched by summer 2022.

OMS designs and manufactures marine instrument deployment systems, hydraulic cylinders, thrusters, and control systems for large vessel applications in its UK-based factory which are then exported to the worldwide market.
