World Oceans Day – online Monday 8 June

There is a host of activity planned for World Oceans Day on Monday June 8. The day is designed to raise awareness of how people can #protectourhome and our blue planet.

The activities begin this weekend with ‘Youthathon’, a 24-hour livestream event on June 6-7, that allows young people around the world the opportunity to learn more about conservation efforts and environmental topics of interest, and to connect with a global community of young changemakers.

There will be 24 different sessions with 24 different (but interrelated) topics on conservation, art, plastic pollution, creative writing, storytelling, climate change, marine biology, activism, and more. It’s free to attend, but people need to register.

As well as other organisations, the Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is running a full day of online activities on Monday which includes learning about salinity and density, creating art from plastic bags, and a lecture on Ships, Sea & the Stars: World Oceans Day special (followed by a quiz).

For 2020, World Oceans Day is growing the global movement to call on world leaders to protect 30% of our blue planet by 2030 and has raised a petition calling for a network of highly protected areas.
