Durley teenager named RYA South Region Youth Champion 2018

Matilda’s sailing achievements over the past 12 months have been impressive. She has secured the title of Laser Radial 2017 Under 17 Radial World Champion, She’s also the Laser Radial Nationals female youth champion.

Matilda, who is a member of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, will receive a trophy at the official awards presentation taking place on Sunday 04 March at the RYA Dinghy Show 2018 in London. The awards will be presented by 49er World Champion and Rio Olympian Dylan Fletcher.

It’s been an incredible year for Matilda and she is already fixing on her goals for the coming season. “My major focus is to qualify for the 2018 ISAF Youth Worlds in Texas”, she says. “I’m really looking forward to the year ahead!”

For her achievements in the past twelve months Matilda was also named Winchester District Junior Sportswoman of the year and runner up for the YJA Young Sailor of the Year Award.
Created in 2014, the RYA Regional Youth Champion Awards recognise the outstanding achievement and performance of young people across the range of activities the RYA represents, including sailing, windsurfing and powerboating.

RYA Director of Sport Development Alistair Dickson said: “We’re delighted to recognize the achievements of these sailors who have all shown lots of hard work, sacrifice and determination to the sport. “The Awards also help to emphasize the endless support of our many volunteers who work so hard at the club level to give our sailors the best possibly start to their future sailing careers.”
