Explore our volunteer open morning at Tees Barrage

The Canal & River Trust are looking for people who want a new challenge for 2018 and love working with children to help their education team bring their Tees Barrage to life.

They need your help with the Canal & River Trust’s education team, known as Explorers, to develop new, interactive and curriculum-related resources for local primary schools, Scout and Brownie groups to use during trips to the Tees Barrage.

You’ll also host learning sessions with pupils and teachers, helping youngsters learn about their local environment, from the history of the River Tees and the construction of the Tees Barrage, to its importance in preventing flooding and enhancing life within and by the water.

Claire Cavendish, Education Co-ordinator at Canal & River Trust, said: “We’re looking for people who love working with children and feel passionate about bringing learning to life. Volunteers get involved in all sorts of activities, from classroom sessions exploring the area’s heritage and practical activities on water safety, to getting hands-on with wildlife, so it’s a really interesting and varied role – no two days are the same.”

The role needs three to five days commitment a month during school hours in term time, as well as some evening, weekend and school holiday sessions.

Activities already included in the Tees Barrage Explorers programme include:

• Introducing Tees Barrage – including a tour of the control room

• Bridges of the Tees – understand the different bridge types

• Tees through time – a historical exploration of the area

• Water safety – including how to use a throw line and life ring

“Being part of the Canal & River Trust team is a lot of fun and offers all sorts of opportunities, not only for teaching and inspiring youngsters but also in making new friends, developing your skills and enjoying some fresh air,” Claire added.
