New non-bioicide treatment cleans up algae

Marine consumables specialist Go-Stock believes the way algae is cleaned will change forever with the new industry approved non-biocide Marine Algae Cleaner™.

Gone are the days of environmentally-damaging hypochlorites and bleaches with the release of a new, completely eco-friendly product, Oleonix Marine Algae Cleaner™.

Not only is the product highly effective on marine algae and aquatic growth but it – uniquely –complies with all HSE and Environment Agency guidelines.

Marine Algae Cleaner™ is classified as a NON-BIOCIDE and is designed to not only preserve environmental quality and human health but also to be a truly effective cleaner of aquatic algae throughout all marine applications (seawater and fresh water).

Currently the most popular products in use for killing algae contain Sodium Hypochlorite a very harmful biocide. Such bleach-based products are classed as very toxic to the aquatic environment and hazardous to humans. The use of this chemical significantly affects the localised area of application and has a direct lowering effect on species diversity.

The fundamental problem with biocides is that they are designed to kill things, with the associated detrimental effect on the marine environment as a consequence.

Marine Algae Cleaner™ works in an extremely effective way, and removes algae by breaking the bond between the growth and the infected material’s surface. The released waste is then simply rinsed away safely and the infected surface is cleared without killing any plant life. The Marine Algae Cleaner™ will also help to prevent re-growth.

Extremely easy and cost-effective to apply, Marine Algae Cleaner™ only requires spraying onto the affected area, spread by light brushing and left to clean naturally over a tidal range or 24-hour period. Algae is normally removed by the action of the Cleaner alone without the need for pressure washing or scrubbing.

Applications are normally effective for far longer periods than standard hypochlorites or bleach products, saving time and money and causing far less damage to the environment. The Cleaner is also effective in preventing early re-growth.

Typical applications are concrete and wood-clad slipways, quaysides, harbour steps, pontoons, tidal structures and aids to navigation (beacons, piles, poles, buoys etc), mooring structures and semi-wet shady areas.

Marine Algae Cleaner™ is available in 5 litre, 20 litre and 1000 litre (IBC) containers. The product is normally diluted up to 1:20 parts with tap water depending on extent of algae growth. The product requires no special protective clothing for application although standard PPE precautions are advised. The product does not contain substances at concentrations presenting a health hazard within the meaning of the CHIP regulations.

Distributors are sought for Scotland, Midlands, Wales, East Anglia and other areas.
