Sailing clubs given chance to focus and grow

Ambitious sailing clubs across Northern Ireland are being given the chance to develop and realise their vision through an innovative initiative by RYA Northern Ireland.

Through the Focus Clubs initiative, 10 lucky clubs will be selected and each will receive advice on planning and development, funding opportunities, promotion, coaching and equipment support.   RYA Northern Ireland will work with the club to sustain or increase their active membership.

The clubs will also receive direct support from RYA Northern Ireland’s Regional Development Officer and Active Clubs Co-Ordinator.

Killyleagh Yacht Club was chosen as one of the 2017 Focus Clubs and Scott Rogers it was highly beneficial.   He comments: “Killyleagh Yacht Club has had the opportunity to meet directly with key staff and decision makers from RYA Northern Ireland. This meant that we were able to ask questions and provide feedback directly to those who are able to act upon it.

“By taking part in focus club events we have been able to attract two new adult crew members who would otherwise have missed the opportunity to take up sailing at an older age. We’d recommend the Focus Club initiative, as it has great potential and we have learned a great deal from our participation this year.”

RYA Northern Ireland’s Active Clubs Co-Ordinator Lisa McCaffrey said: “Partnership working has proven to make the biggest difference to club development and through this programme RYA Northern Ireland will offer guidance and support, enabling clubs to work with local community partners and other sporting agencies.”

Clubs can apply for the initiative by contacting Lisa McCaffrey by email at Lisa.mccaffrey@rya.org.uk.  The closing date for the initiative is Friday 2nd November 2018.
