Vendée Globe: update 16Nov20

Nicolas Troussel (Corum L’Épargne) has dismasted NW of the Cape Verdes

French skipper Troussel, who was lying in seventh place, has dismasted on Corum L’Épargne this morning. He was racing south in brisk NE’ly trade wind conditions some 260 nautical miles NW of the Cape Verde islands.

Troussel, 46, was not injured and is in the process of securing the boat before further assessing the situation.

Sam Davies is looking seriously at the Doldrums

“It’s looking quite good. I’m really far west which will make Doldrums easier. I’ve only been looking briefly because I know it can change quite a lot in the approach. So today I’m going to be looking seriously at how it’s going to be.

“Over last two days I have had time to chill out, and get some sleep.

“I’ve had a shower. I’ve chopped off some hair. I’m ready for the southern ocean.”

Miranda Merron is pleased with her first week’s performance

“Just because we’re much further back doesn’t mean we’re not racing hard.

“I’m concentrating on making the boat go faster.

“Much to my surprise and despite the fact I’ve missed the train on much of the fleet, and I’ve had technical issues to deal with which are not my forte, I’ve been in a pretty good mood most of the time. I haven’t had a sense of humour failure.”

Pip Hare is impatiently waiting for wind

“Since about two o’clock last night, there’s been less than 3 knots, so I’m just flopping around.

“To be where I am now is better than I possibly imagined but the thing is you do well to start off with, but then it hurts more when you lose it. I’m trying hard not to think about it.

“Otherwise I’ll get obsessed about people catching me up.

I’ve had lots of jobs. Won’t have much skin left on my knees by the end of it. My boat’s not the easiest to get around.”
