French boatbuilder Alubat has begun construction of the Cigale 15 QR, a new 15-metre aluminium cruising yacht developed in collaboration with naval architecture firm Finot-Conq. The project marks the latest addition to the Cigale range and reflects continued demand for offshore cruising yachts that combine long-range capability with access to shallow-water cruising grounds.

Swing keel central to design brief

The Cigale 15 QR was developed from a brief provided by an experienced owner seeking a yacht capable of covering long distances at sustained speeds, while maintaining access to a wide variety of sailing areas.

A key feature of the design is its swing keel. With the keel raised, the draft is reduced to 1.62m, allowing access to shallow anchorages. When lowered to its full depth of 3.3m, the keel is designed to provide increased stability and sailing performance.

According to Alubat, the yacht is intended for a range of uses, including short-handed sailing, family cruising and long offshore passages.

Finot-Conq returns to Cigale range

Alubat partnered with Finot-Conq on the project, continuing a relationship that dates back to the original Cigale designs.

The new model incorporates developments in hull design, weight optimisation and rig configuration. The hull features hard chines to increase form stability, while a chamfer beneath the sheerline contributes to weight reduction higher in the structure.

The standard specification includes a carbon mast and a backstay-free rig derived from concepts used on modern ocean-racing yachts.

Aluminium construction remains core feature

As with other yachts produced by the yard, the Cigale 15 QR is built in aluminium.

Alubat says hull plating thickness has been tailored according to structural loads in different areas of the vessel to optimise weight distribution while maintaining the strength required for offshore operation.

The interior has been designed with a focus on long-distance cruising, combining lightweight materials with practical accommodation and living spaces.

Launch planned for 2027

The first Cigale 15 QR is currently under construction at Alubat’s shipyard in Les Sables-d’Olonne and is scheduled for launch in spring 2027.

Following launch, the yacht will be based in La Rochelle, where it will take part in sailing events, selected races and charter operations. Alubat says the programme will also include social and educational initiatives focused on sharing sailing knowledge and experience.

Principal dimensions include an overall length of 15.7m, a beam of 4.7m and a light displacement of 12,500kg. The yacht carries 3,200kg of ballast, 400 litres of fresh water and 600 litres of fuel. Power is provided by a 50hp shaft-drive engine.
