America’s Cup: New York American Magic names official supplier
Bicycle component manufacturer Sram is partnering with the New York Yacht Club American Magic racing team, in its bid to win the 37th America’s Cup.
“This is an amazing opportunity to not only demonstrate our products and technologies in a new and unique way but be a part of one of the most historic and viewed sporting events in the world,” says Sram CEO Ken Lousberg. “Sram componentry will be integral to the success of this yacht.”
New York Yacht Club American Magic will spend all winter in Pensacola before relocating to Barcelona for the final push into the America’s Cup campaign in 2024. The 37th America’s Cup will take place in Barcelona in September and October 2024.
“NYYC American Magic is investing a lot of time and resources into developing and testing systems for our next-generation AC75,” says Terry Hutchinson, skipper and president of sailing operations for NYYC American Magic. “Sram has 35 years of experience working with high-performing teams, and we’re excited to be collaborating and pushing the boundaries in our pursuit to win the 37th America’s Cup.”
Sram and American Magic say they will provide more specific details of the agreement, as well as in-boat technologies, later this year.
America’s Cup campaigns are gearing up, with less than two years to go until the event takes place.
Olympic gold medalist Tom Slingsby has signed with New York Yacht Club American Magic. Slingsby previously helped an American team win the Auld Mug in 2013.
On Monday (13 October), Prada and Pirelli unveiled the new Luna Rossa boat, christened by Miuccia Prada. The prototype will be used to conduct research and development in preparation for the new AC75.
Organisers have also recently confirmed the structure of the Youth and Women’s events.
Running sequentially, the Youth America’s Cup starts on 19 September 2024 and the Women’s America’s Cup on 3 October 2024.
