Avikus, a South Korean technology firm and a subsidiary of Hyundai, has been recognised for the design of its NeuBoat. On 11 June, the autonomous navigation and docking system for recreational boats was selected as a winner in the Design Concept division of the 2024 Red Dot Design Award, marking the first time an Avikus product has received a Red Dot prize.

Established in 1955, the Red Dot Design Award is an international competition celebrating excellence in product design, communication design, and design concepts. The Design Concept competition was established in 2005. Winners are selected each year based on criteria such as design innovation and functionality.

The self-driving NeuBoat is Avikus’ solution to minimise the potential for human errors. The firm has focused on developing navigational assistance and autonomous solutions with the aim of improving marine leisure safety and convenience facilitated by an intuitive interface.

Lim Dohyeong, CEO of Avikus, says: “Avikus NeuBoat, the world’s first Autonomy/ADAS product for boats, continues to set the standard for autonomy technology in the industry.

“Boat ADAS enhances the boating experience for both beginners and seasoned enthusiasts, and it is expected to become the industry standard in the near future.”

Avikus also recently announced it’s collaborating with and US boatbuilder AquaSport Boats. That will integrate Avikus’ AI tech into boat models under the Twin Vee, Forza and AquaSport brands. The first models will make their debut this summer, with additional models being introduced in late 2024 under the Twin Vee, Forza and AquaSport brands.

Earlier this year, the firm also garnered recognition from a CES 2024 Innovation Award for three of its projects and solutions, including NeuBoat. This comes on the heels of Avikus’ previous win in 2023 at CES for the original NeuBoat product.
