BatteryCheck lifts lid on tech to help run batteries safely

BatteryCheck is one of the 15 startups preparing to showcase at the first METSTRADE Start-Up Pavilion, running at next week’s trade fair.

BatteryCheck provides continuous monitoring and predictive analytics to help companies safely operate batteries in their devices, increasing battery life, optimising energy usage, and alerting potential battery issues before they occur.

Michal Sastinsky, co-founder of BatteryCheck, reflects on the challenges and contrasting agility of startup life. “Being in the corporation is ‘safe’; a startup is like a minefield,” he says. “And you have no idea whether you will survive or die. It’s very time consuming and you are often alone. So, having the right team of like-minded people is crucial. On the other hand, you work on a solution you love and have the freedom to make decisions.”

Sastinsky says BatteryCheck helps operate the batteries used as the primary or backup energy source safely and predictably. “Instead of waiting for failures, we provide continuous monitoring and alerts, increasing battery life and optimising energy usage. Existing measurements from battery management systems fuel AI-powered analytics, provide real-time insights into battery health, and predict potential battery issues before they occur,” he explains.

The startup’s technology aims to help companies prevent the failures of their battery-powered devices and vehicles, reduce downtime, prevent the stop of the production or operations with battery-powered devices, keep SLAs, recommend the right time for predictable maintenance and second life, reach procurement savings, etc.

In terms of opportunities in the marketplace, Sastinsky says e-mobility and the transition from fossil fuels to renewables have made batteries the new oil and the primary and backup energy source for practically all devices and vehicles. “Batteries, if not managed well throughout the entire lifecycle, represent a severe environmental hazard, safety risk, and significant ‘unknown’ to businesses and end users in their unpredictable behavior. Rising prices of raw materials, regulation pressure for sustainability, CO2 neutrality, and green initiatives push manufacturers to address these challenges and develop programmatic solutions for battery life cycle management.”

Sastinsky says companies are embracing the use of batteries as either their primary or secondary energy source, a move driven by environmental and safety considerations. “By integrating advanced lithium-ion and hybrid battery systems into their vessels and gadgets, these companies can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and reduce emissions. This transition promotes sustainability and ensures a quieter and more efficient yachting experience for passengers, further enhancing safety and comfort on board,” he says.

This year, METSTRADE and Yachting Ventures are teaming up to introduce the new Start-Up Pavilion – a platform for emerging startups to showcase their latest products and technologies.

Yachting Ventures (YV) is the world’s first startup hub for the leisure marine and yachting industries. It aims to provide the network, support and opportunities that startups in this space need to succeed. The YV team has now worked with over 250 startups in 25+ countries and the portfolio companies have collectively raised over £30 million in funding.
