Video: Dramatic footage as man and dogs rescued from sinking boat

Coast Guard Airlifts Dogs From Sinking Boat Off Oregon Coast

Footage shows the moment a man and his two dogs were hoisted to safety by a US Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter off the Oregon coast after their boat started to sink.

The Pacific Northwest division of the agency says its rescue teams responded to reports about a boat that had lost power and was taking on water around 38nm off Whaleshead Beach in Oregon, near the border with California.

Rescuers used a helicopter hoist to retrieve the man and two dogs. The individual was then transferred to local emergency medical services. It’s not currently known if he required treatment for injuries.

Footage shared by the agency on X shows the dogs wearing life jackets and being hoisted into the helicopter in a basket while being comforted by the rescue crew.

While the boat was actively taking on water during the rescue, it’s not known if the boat eventually sank.

Hundreds of dogs are saved each year by rescue organisations. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) saved 164 dogs in 2022, including Flossy the dog, who survived a 130ft cliff fall on Anglesey, North Wales.

In 2022, a family dog was rescued from rising tides on the UK south coast, after a four-day search involving coastguards, firefighters, the police and a flying sausage attached to a drone.

The Jack Russell-whippet, named Millie, became stranded on dangerous mudflats after slipping her lead during an outing in Havant, Hampshire. She was rescued after the sausage managed to lure her 300 metres to safety.
