Five missing after cargo ship collision off China

A crew of five seamen from the city of Wenzhou are missing following a collision in the East China Sea, according to maritime authorities in China’s Zhejiang province. 

The Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier Ocean Loong collided with the fishing vessel Zhecangyu 00808 registered in Wenzhou on Tuesday evening, China Daily reports. The incident happened around 85 nm off the coast of Wenzhou.

The fishing boat sank with five men on board, all of whom were still missing as of Wednesday morning. A search and rescue operation is underway with helicopters and rescue vessels in the area.

The 224.97-metre bulk carrier Ocean Loong, which is managed by Xiamen Datong Xin Luyang Shipping Co, had been en route from Tieshan to Lanshan in China according to MarineTraffic.

Ocean Loong remains near the collision site as of Wednesday morning. 

Temperatures in Wenzhou city were around 9C overnight. China Daily reports that local maritime authorities “are sparing no efforts” in searching for the five missing men.
