Icom launches ‘world-first’ IP-M60 marine VHF/LTE hybrid radio

IP-M60 Marine VHFLTE Hybrid Radio ICOM

Marine radio manufacturer Icom has unveiled the new IP-M60, which the firm describes as the ‘world’s first marine VHF/LTE hybrid radio’.

Icom, which revealed the device during METSTRADE 2023, says the IP-M60 combines the capabilities of an LTE radio with the reliability of a marine VHF radio in a single handheld device. This ‘all-in-one’ solution ensures that mariners can stay connected regardless of the environment they find themselves in.

Key features of the IP-M60 Marine VHF/LTE hybrid radio include:

LTE Network Connectivity: Icom says the inclusion of LTE network connectivity provides long-range comms for a handheld and allows constant contact with locations away from the vessel. This feature enables mariners to communicate efficiently even inland far from the shore. (Coverage area depends on network provider).

Independent PTT buttons: The Hybrid Radio makes it easy to answer calls with dedicated Push-to-Talk (PTT) buttons for both Marine VHF and LTE, aiding swift communications.

Simultaneous reception and transmission: With the IP-M60, Icom says mariners can simultaneously receive and transmit on both the marine VHF and LTE networks.

Bridge mode function: The hybrid radio introduces a bridge function that relays received marine VHF audio to the LTE radio group while transferring LTE radio conversations to the marine VHF group. This bridge ensures that critical information reaches the right personnel in real-time.

‘Simultaneous TalkListen’ function: In LTE mode the hybrid radio offers the Simultaneous TalkListen function for full-duplex communication, making it easier for mariners to communicate efficiently during critical operations.

The IP-M60 also offers Bluetooth technology for wireless operation, and an IP67 waterproof rating.

Icom says its new IP-M60 marine VHF/LTE hybrid radio is suitable for shipping companies, port operations, Coastguard, rescue organisations, yacht racing organisers, superyacht owners or any commercial marine operation.

There is currently no final fixed price or release date for the IP-M60, but it is planned to be available around spring 2024.
