Lifeboat drill leaves two crew seriously injured

Two crew members on a bulk carrier anchored in Vancouver’s English Bay were seriously injured after a lifeboat unexpectedly plunged into the water during a drill on Tuesday, according to CBC.

According to the Canadian Coast Guard, the accident happened at about 1:15 p.m. Both crew members were on the lifeboat when it was released from the ship, and it was sinking when rescuers were called.

Coast guard officers, the Vancouver Police Department’s marine unit and the Vancouver Port Authority all responded to the mayday call.

A vessel from the Kitsilano Coast Guard station was on scene within 10 minutes, according to a spokesperson, and paramedics treated the two injured people for ‘significant injuries’.

According to B.C. Emergency Health Services, the patients were taken to hospital in serious condition, but they are both stable.
