MCA consults on safe working practices

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is consulting on its proposals for the 2nd Amendment to the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers (COSWP) and British Marine needs your feedback to ensure this Code is fit for purpose.The amendments have been developed and proposed following a consultation process with members of the National Maritime Occupational Health and Safety Committee and through discussion’s with the MCA’s tripartite COSWP Working Group. The consultation is reviewing a range of guidelines, including:

  • A new section on sharps
  • Unmanned machinery spaces
  • Use of solid carbon dioxide (dry ice)
  • Safe access to fishing vessels and small craft in ports
  • Purchasing sunglasses for use by seafarers

The consultation closes on Friday 29 September. If you are intending to submit feedback direct to British Marine,  please ensure you do so before the deadline so that we can collate your responses and submit them to the MCA as part of a British Marine response.
