MDL Marinas awarded for its cyber security

MDL has been awarded the Cyber Essentials Plus certification, a UK government-backed scheme to validate businesses that operate at the highest level of cyber security.

Organisations achieving this level of certification must demonstrate they are in control of their user accounts and all privileges that allow access to their organisational data and services, including third party accounts.

MDL Marinas says it has worked ‘incredibly hard’ to attain this level, after being awarded the Cyber Essentials certification in December 2023. The marina operator has worked to develop a clear picture of its cyber security across its entire IT infrastructure and put in place key protection measures to prevent future cyber attacks.

From its online visitor berthing booking system and Otium Rewards scheme to its new Falco Smart Wireless Technology, MDL Marinas’ operations are increasingly online based. The firm says the decision to better secure its IT systems against cyber attacks will prove a vital one as the business moves towards a digital set-up for the majority of its user-based systems.

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed scheme that helps organisations protect themselves against a whole range of cyber attacks. These can come in many forms. While the majority are quite rudimentary, they are becoming increasingly sophisticated and are used by organised criminal groups to steal money, information or simply cause business disruption.

In 2023, for example, German shipbuilder Lürssen was targeted by a ransomware cyberattack. Brunswick Corporation was also impacted by an IT security incident that impacted some of its systems and global facilities, causing a pause in operations.
