New 68-berth marina opens on Algarve coast
Marina de Vilamoura, Portugal’s largest marina, celebrated its 50th anniversary on 23 November 2024.
The event included a formal ceremony and the launch of the Nova Marina, a new facility that adds three pontoons, providing 68 berths for large vessels between 20 and 40 metres.
These berths feature systems that include individual pump-out units, remote water and electricity management, electric boat charging points, desalination capabilities, and photovoltaic energy generation.
“We have transformed a visionary concept into an attractive destination that represents innovation, sophistication, and a profound commitment to nautical excellence,” says Isolete Correia, CEO of Marina de Vilamoura and CEO of developer Vilamoura.
Founded in 1974 by Artur Cupertino de Miranda, Marina de Vilamoura has grown from its initial 612 berths to become the largest marina in Portugal, with a current capacity of 825 berths.
“Over these 50 years, our journey symbolises much more than a mere nautical infrastructure. Above all, we are creating a legacy that will define nautical excellence for future generations,” adds Correia.
The marina has received multiple awards, including the 5 Gold Anchor Platinum certification from The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA).
There is a growing demand for large vessel berthing along the Algarve coastline, and the opening of the Nova Marina is likely to capture some of this demand.
The group’s owners — a group of investors connected to British fund Arrow Global — say Vilamoura has plans for further developments in the area, including golf courses, sports facilities and residential properties.
