New Falcon electric outboard to launch at METSTRADE

Danish drive system and battery developer, EPTechnologies (EPT), will host the world premiere of its new Falcon electric outboard motor at METSTRADE in November.

EPT’s Falcon is the developer’s lightest, quietest and most efficient outboard in its class.

Designed entirely as an electric propulsion system, EPT says Falcon breaks away from conventional models, which typically retrofit electric components onto platforms originally intended for combustion engines. This novel design enables a compact, lightweight build that minimises drag, improves efficiency, and maximises onboard space for additional batteries. It extends range, boosts performance, and significantly lowers environmental impact.

At the heart of the 130kW drive is its axial flux design. Falcon weighs 27kg and its shaft length can also be adjusted.

The new electric drive is designed for use on a wide range of vessels – from leisure yachts to passenger ships and rescue boats. According to EPTechnologies, hydrofoils also benefit from significant improvements: once planing, their energy consumption with Falcon drops by two-thirds. A more powerful 230kW version is currently in development to extend the product line.

Falcon’s steering system has also been completely re-engineered. Now, only the propeller and the propeller hub rotate while the motor block remains stationary. This setup protects sensitive engine components and is designed to improve weight distribution and stability, particularly in twin outboard configurations. The company says the 360° rotating propeller hub also offers outstanding manoeuvrability in confined spaces, eliminating the need for additional bow thrusters.

In October 2024, ZeroMar, a US firm specialising in marine electrification, and EPTechnologies announced an expansion of their partnership, following two years of collaboration.

EPTechnologies produces its own range of ultra-light, highly efficient batteries, developed in-house. These can be tailored to suit the specific needs of each vessel, ensuring ideal weight distribution and optimised configuration.

With offices in Sønderborg, Denmark, and Reinbek, Germany, EPT employs a team of 55.
