RNLI Severn class tested with DuroWipers system

A RNLI Severn class lifeboat will be fitted and tested with the DuroWipers Class 60 pantographs as part of the lifesaving charity’s life extension programme for the class.

“If the wipers perform well during trials, we will extend the order to the first batch of six boats in the programme,” says Nick Fenwick, Severn Life Extension Project Manager.

This is not the first time the RNLI has worked with DuroWipers. Following a contract secured in 2012 to supply 57 RNLI vessels with its wiper systems, including the new Shannon class lifeboats, the company has fitted over half of the subsequent new-build Shannon class with its Class 50 system, which is said to have performed well.

“DuroWipers’ come with a Lifetime Warranty which makes them maintenance free,” says Noel Gould, DuroWipers’ Owner. “That’s how confident we are in the strength of our wipers. The wipers’ reputation speaks for itself.”

The RNLI says that the programme of upgrades, including the new wiper system, will extend the life of its Severn class lifeboats so they can continue saving lives at sea for another 25 years.

“It is advantageous to rationalise supply, but this is not the main driver for selecting a supplier for new projects,” continues Fenwick. “Maintainability and reducing maintenance are key criteria when selecting equipment along with cost, reliability, ruggedness, supplier confidence and any other relevant criteria, dependent on the equipment being supplied.”

DuroWipers also supplies the Royal Navy.
