RYA launches LGBTQIA+ network

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has launched a new LGBTQIA+ network. The network aims to make equality and inclusion for those that identify as LGBTQIA+ a reality in the sport of sailing, reaching not just the RYA membership, but also stretching across to RYA affiliates and the wider boating community.

RYA says the group is open to anyone who identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, or anybody who is an ally, who is interested in the sport and actively supports the RYA’s ambition for a diverse and welcoming culture.

The news comes as organisations across the UK mark the country’s annual LGBT+ History Month throughout February.

The RYA’s LGBTQIA+ network will initially be limited to 18 members and will aim to meet quarterly. Members will usually belong to the group for a term of two years, after which they will need to reaffirm their interest for up to another two years, according to RYA.

Mel Hide, RYA’s director of external affairs, says: “Inclusivity and equality should be at the heart of boating, we believe creating a welcoming and sustainable sport for all to join regardless of their romantic and sexual orientation, sex characteristic or gender, is vital. The group’s aim will be to raise the profile of boating amongst the LGBTQIA+ community and to have a positive influence on the strategic direction and communications at the RYA.

“Launching the network is another milestone in the RYA’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity Strategy, and we encourage anyone that wishes to get involved with building a culture of inclusivity to join the LGBTQIA+ Network.”

The network launch follows the launch of the RYA’s first Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy last year. The strategy aims to encourage equality, diversity and inclusion across the sport, and develop a culture free from discrimination.

“The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion pages allow anyone involved in sailing and boating to access support, information and guidance which will increase knowledge and understanding of the role you can play in helping us to ensure that sailing and boating continues to be inclusive and welcoming,” says the RYA. “By working together, we can ensure that the sport we love is representative of the diverse communities that we serve.”

The RYA currently has several other working groups, including the Women in Boating Working Group, Ethnicity in Boating Focus Group and the RYA National Training Youth Forum, which is to be launched later this year.
