Smartgyro adds battery-powered option for SG20 stabiliser

Smartgyro SG20

Gyroscopic stabiliser manufacturer Smartgyro has introduced a battery-powered integration for its SG20 stabiliser.

The system introduces an option for running the SG20 without a generator, with the aim of reducing noise levels during use on 40–55 foot yachts.

The SG20 can operate on battery power for sustained periods, enabling stabilisation when the generator is switched off. Italy-headquartered Smartgyro says this provides quieter onboard conditions while maintaining stabilisation performance.

Carlo Gazerro, sales manager at Smartgyro, says: “Owners today expect comfort to be immediate, seamless, and quiet. With this integration we’ve responded to a real need in the 40–55 foot segment, delivering powerful stabilisation without the background noise of a generator. That means greater freedom, more enjoyable moments on board, and an added benefit for our dealer network: a solution that’s easier to recommend, integrate, and tailor to owner expectations.”

Smaller generators operating at high RPMs can produce noticeable noise on board. The development of the battery integration — introduced at Metstrade 2025 — follows feedback from owners who wanted to use the SG20 without running a generator for long periods.

“We work closely with owners and shipyards to push the boundaries of onboard performance, comfort, and efficiency. This project is the result of that dialogue, and it’s already showing remarkable results in the field,” says Fabrizio Stifani, R&D manager at Smartgyro. “We’re also exploring future enhancements, such as a smart adaptive speed function designed to balance performance and energy efficiency, further evolving our approach to intelligent, quiet, and sustainable stabilisation.”

Smartgyro trialled the configuration on a Ferretti 52 equipped with an SG20 and a 6kWh Mastervolt battery pack. According to the company, the system has run for two years with consistent performance and reliability.

The owner of the test vessel says: “I was looking for a stabiliser that could perform in any sea state, but also operate quietly during the most peaceful hours on board. The SG20’s battery integration makes that possible: it runs for hours without the generator, while still delivering the stabilisation I count on. It’s reliable, flexible, and perfectly fits the way I enjoy life on board.”

System features include a Smartgyro interface that displays real-time battery status and stabiliser data (details are available on the company’s website). The company claims that users can run the SG20 for up to five hours without generator use when operating in night mode. Approved configurations are listed for Mastervolt systems, with a Victron arrangement to follow.
