SYBAss sets future direction with new board and appointments
Robert van Tol named executive director from 1 January 2026
The Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) has confirmed a series of key leadership changes following its recent board elections and meetings held in Monaco and Fort Lauderdale.
The appointments are said to shape the organisation’s strategic direction and advocacy work, representing 25 global shipyards.
Jan-Bart Verkuly, CEO of Feadship, has been appointed the new president, succeeding Michael Breman, sales director at Lürssen Yachts, who will remain on the board as past president.
Bas Peute of Vitters has been named vice chair, following his election to represent the sailing yacht sector, while Michelle Jones of Delta Marine has been re-elected as treasurer.
Giovanna Vitelli of Azimut-Benetti and Massimo Perotti of Sanlorenzo will continue in their roles for another three-year term. In addition, Theo Hooning has been re-elected as a non-executive board member. Hooning, who will step down as secretary general at the end of 2025, received recognition from members for his 18 years of service alongside Breman.
As part of the wider restructuring, SYBAss confirmed that Robert van Tol will take up the newly designated role of executive director on 1 January 2026. Van Tol previously led the Water Revolution Foundation for seven years, where he oversaw environmental and sustainability initiatives across the sector.
His appointment signals an organisational shift toward a more future-focused strategy, including greater attention to sustainability measures, in line with recent member feedback.
Van Tol describes the position as an “absolute privilege,” where he looks forward to working with shipyards, and notes: “New builds are a key driver of innovation, maximising both opportunities and responsibilities that come with each new project to continuously move the needle, both for product and process.”
Hooning reflects on his successor and highlights: “Robert already has a deep-rooted understanding of the SYBAss mission and operations from his past involvement. He is well placed to carry the organisation forward and through the new challenges that face the industry and builders in particular.”
Verkuyl welcomes his new role and acknowledges the contributions of outgoing leaders. He shares: “I am honoured to take on the presidency of SYBAss and look forward to working with the board and our members to continue to advance the superyacht industry and address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. I am committed to building on the strong foundation laid by my predecessors and ensuring SYBAss remains a leading voice in the maritime world.
“I also want to extend my sincere gratitude to Michael Breman and Theo Hooning for their exceptional leadership and tireless efforts in professionalising our industry through SYBAss. I am particularly eager to collaborate with Robert van Tol, our new executive director, as we embark on this next chapter.”
