Three injured after marquee collapse at UK marine event

Three people have been injured after a marquee at a marine show collapsed as technicians were dismantling it.

Southampton City Council has confirmed the structure was in place as part of the Seawork marine exhibition, which ran from 13-15 June 2023 at Mayflower Park in Southampton.

The BBC reports that ambulance and fire crews were called to the waterfront park off Town Quay at about 8:30am BST.

In a statement, South Central Ambulance Service said three people had “sustained minor injuries”.

The 50-metre ‘Alu Hall’ temporary structure is owned by Neptunus, a specialist in event structures and temporary buildings.

A spokesman for the firm tells the Sun: “The Alu Hall has an impeccable safety record and is one of the most popular structures in our range. It has been used extensively and successfully at hundreds of global events and exhibitions over the years.

“Our technicians were in the dismantling process when the collapse occurred.”

An investigation is now underway to determine the cause.

An eyewitness tells the Daily Echo they were walking along when the marquee “suddenly” collapsed with a loud “bang”. They told the outlet: “Several workers ran out of the way. Then I saw a man lying on his side crying out and several people ran over.”

The ambulance service has confirmed that one of the patients was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Two others were treated and discharged at the scene.
