Twelfth corporate carve-out for Teledyne as it snaps-up TransponderTech

Tanker sails into sunset

Teledyne Technologies, which makes digital imaging products and software, is now on its twelfth corporate carve-out, and it’s third of this year.

It’s announced it’s acquiring TransponderTech to add to the assets of Maretron – Octoplex, MPower and MConnect – which it bagged in July this year. In February it also cherry-picked select aerospace and defence electronics businesses from Excelitas Technologies for approximately $710 million. That acquisition included the optical systems business known under the Qioptiq brand based in Northern Wales, UK, as well as the US-based advanced electronic systems business.

TransponderTech’s based in Sweden and makes SOLAS-certified communications and navigation solutions for commercial maritime, military, and airborne applications. The acquisition (from Saab AB) includes a portfolio of connected commercial maritime products, including Automatic Identification System (AIS), VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technologies.

“TransponderTech serves customers and markets familiar to Teledyne and designs and manufactures products that are complementary to existing Teledyne products,” says Grégoire Outters, vice president and general manager of Teledyne FLIR Maritime (and Raymarine). Teledyne FLIR’s Maritime group includes Raymarine, FLIR Marine, and ChartWorld.

“Today, Teledyne primarily participates in maritime navigation and safety by offering products such as electronic chart displays (ECDIS), radars, and thermal imaging systems. Adding TransponderTech’s business, employees, and advanced AIS, VDES, and GNSS technologies to Teledyne should enhance the safety, efficiency, and operational reach of our customers at sea.”

Outters is referring to TransponderTech’s development of next-generation maritime AIS solutions. VDES transponders are said to offer enhanced security, expanded data exchange capabilities, and interoperability with low Earth orbit satellites, enabling global coverage for maritime operators.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and anticipated to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2025.
