VIDEO: 48-hour blaze on cargo ship off Swedish coast

Almirante Storni fire

A major fire that broke out aboard a cargo ship carrying logs off Gothenburg was still burning after more than 48 hours, authorities said.

Firefighters have been attempting to tackle the blaze that broke out aboard the Liberian-flagged Almirante Storni while anchored off the coast of Gothenburg this weekend.

The fire, which began in the cargo hold on Saturday, had not been completely extinguished as of Monday, with helicopters deployed to pour water onto the fire. Strong winds have been hampering efforts to tackle the blaze.

On Monday, the Swedish Coast Guard confirmed that the fire was continuing to burn on a 50m-70m section of the ship, but it is not believed to be spreading. It also confirmed the 17-strong crew of the Almirante Storni are reportedly still on board and safe, and are assisting the firefighters of the Swedish Coast Guard
