Viking replica used in The Odyssey film sparks dispute over repair costs 

The owners of a Swedish Viking longship replica used during the filming of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey have claimed that Universal Pictures has not paid for repairs after the vessel was returned damaged during production.

The 18-meter replica, Glad av Gillberga, is owned by Swedish non-profit association Vikingaleden and was used as one of the escort vessels in the film’s maritime scenes. According to the organisation, the ship required around $6,000 worth of repairs following its six-month filming use by the production team.

Vikingaleden says it invoiced Universal to cover the repair costs, in line with the agreement requiring the studio to replace or repair damage. However, the association claims it has not received payment, despite not charging for the volunteer labour involved.

The replica Viking ship, built in 1998, is based on a vessel discovered in Roskilde Fjord, Denmark, dating back to around 1040. Over the years, Glad av Gillberga has sailed across the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and Canada before being selected for the Hollywood film.

During filming, the vessel reportedly sustained damage including a cracked hull, damage to the stern and mast, worn rigging and the need for repainting.

The Odyssey is based on Homer’s epic poem following Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his decade-long journey home after the Trojan War. The film reportedly had a production budget of around $250 million and has become one of the year’s highest-grossing films, earning approximately $264 million at the box office.

Despite the dispute, Vikingaleden confirmed that Glad av Gillberga has since returned to service.
