Avikus launches Neuboat Navi collision avoidance system

Avikus Neuboat Navi

Avikus, HD Hyundai’s autonomous navigation in-house subsidiary, has released Neuboat Navi with Control, a system designed for collision avoidance and route planning.

HD Hyundai is a South Korean conglomerate overseeing subsidiaries in shipbuilding, industrial engineering and maritime technologies. It first debuted the autonomous Neuboat navigation system in 2022, and has released Neuboat Dock II earlier this year.

The new Neuboat Navi with Control system includes object recognition, collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, smart autopilot with route planning, and CAN Bus integration with engine and steering control. Avikus says it provides real-time information on the position, distance and speed of stationary and moving objects.

Its autopilot can integrate with existing systems and create automatic routes once a destination is entered. Users can review routes, receive hazard alerts and accept rerouting suggestions. An adaptive cruise function adjusts speed to match the vessel ahead and can slow or halt the boat when a threat is detected. The system is compatible with single or multiple engines as well as electric steering on outboard boats, and it does not require a joystick.

Last June (2024), the first iteration of the Neuboat Dock II autonomous navigation and docking system for recreational boats won the Design Concept division of the 2024 Red Dot Design Award.

Do-Hyeong Lim, CEO of Avikus, says: “Building on the industry-leading and award-winning innovation of the Neuboat Dock system, we have revolutionised water navigation with the release of the new Navi with Control.

“Offering boaters exceptional situational awareness and a robust feature set that integrates with some of the most cutting-edge chartplotters and autopilot technology in the industry, Neuboat gives users the tools to simplify route planning and navigation. Its hazard recognition on the fly is exceptional and will give boaters unprecedented peace of mind.”

Neuboat Navi with Control includes a front-facing LiDAR module with a 142-degree FOV camera operating at 60FPS and built-in LiDAR detection up to 500m, housed in an IPx6-rated enclosure. An Object Recognition Unit provides image processing capabilities, with a Camera Conversion Unit and Engine Gateway included for control functions.

Avikus was established in December 2020 by HD Hyundai. The company has completed autonomous demonstrations, including a 12-seater cruise ship navigating the 10km Pohang Canal without human intervention and the world’s first autonomous navigation across the ocean with its HiNAS (Hyundai Intelligent Navigation Assistant System) Control.
