Awlgrip introduces dual-function gloss primer

Awlgrip has released a new product designed to streamline coating applications in the superyacht sector, which the firm says will save time during applications.

Awlgrip – part of coatings giant AkzoNobel – says its new gloss finish primer is designed for use by professional applicators during the new construction phase, reducing the number of application steps.

The product is sold as part of the Awlgrip high-performance coatings system. It functions as both a finish primer and a show coat, and the firm says the gloss surface enables quick identification and correction of surface imperfections before the topcoat is applied, reducing the risk of rework during critical stages.

Compared to the standard two-layer process, the single-coat formulation of gloss finish primer contains higher volume solids and requires fewer layers. This is said to result in a reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by up to 50 per cent per square metre.

Jemma Lampkin, global commercial director at AkzoNobel’s Yacht Coatings, says: “We developed the gloss finish product with our customers in mind, knowing that they demand efficiency, durability, and a flawless finish. That’s exactly what our new gloss finish primer delivers.

“By combining a high-performance primer with a show coat in one, we’re helping professionals to simplify the painting process and save time, without compromising on quality.”

This innovation is a direct response to the industry’s need for faster turnaround times, reduced material use and superior results.”

She adds: “We are committed to developing solutions that make our customers’ jobs easier and delivering the premium finishes they expect.”

Awlgrip gloss finish primer is currently available in Europe.

In October 2024, AkzoNobel’s yacht coatings division opened its first Yacht Paint Application Centre (YPAC) in the Asia-Pacific region, providing product and technical training alongside the latest digital paint application tools. The facility is located at Gold Coast City Marina in Coomera, Australia, and aims to strengthen AkzoNobel’s global technical support network for applicators and industry professionals.

AkzoNobel says the new facility offers personalised consultations and hands-on training designed to improve skills and support high-quality results.
