British Marine launches water safety training course

British Marine has launched a new Foundation in Water Safety (F-WS) course, offering accredited training to help participants recognise risks in water environments and respond safely in the event of an incident.

Developed with Birmingham and Midland Marine Services Ltd, the two-hour course is accredited by the Institute of Search and Technical Rescue (InSTR) and is intended for people whose work or activities take them near inland waterways, rivers, lakes, marinas, ports or coastal environments.

The course covers a range of hazards associated with open water, including cold water shock, unstable banks, changing water conditions and the risks involved in rescue attempts. It combines classroom learning with practical instruction, giving participants an introduction to water safety principles, risk assessment and low-risk methods of helping others.

The classroom session focuses on identifying and assessing water-related hazards. Participants are introduced to the basics of water hydrology, including how to interpret water conditions, understand water movement and recognise environmental hazards that may not be immediately obvious.

The course also covers the selection and use of water rescue personal protective equipment (PPE), including its benefits, limitations and appropriate applications. Participants are also introduced to the RNLI’s ‘Float to Live’ guidance for accidental immersion.

Other topics include the effects of cold water shock and drowning, how water temperature affects the body’s response and illnesses linked to contaminated water.

Participants then move on to rescue protocols, the hazards posed by unstable ground and the recognised hierarchy of rescue, before taking part in an outdoor practical session demonstrating low-risk rescue techniques.

The practical element includes instruction in the nationally recognised “Shout, Reach, Throw – Don’t Go” rescue methodology, which emphasises assisting a casualty without entering the water.

Manj Mahey, head of training at British Marine, says: “Whether someone works in a marina, boatyard, waterside business or simply spends time around water as part of their role, understanding the hazards is essential. Many water-related incidents are preventable with the right knowledge and awareness. This new Foundation in Water Safety course gives delegates practical skills and the confidence to recognise risks, respond appropriately and ultimately help create safer working environments.”

Training is delivered by instructors from Birmingham and Midland Marine Services, whose experience includes maritime operations, emergency response and risk management.

Courses are available during August and September 2026 at Midland Marines’ base at Gailey Wharf in Staffordshire. Closed courses can also be arranged for groups of six to 12 delegates either at the training centre or at a customer’s premises by prior arrangement.

The Foundation in Water Safety course costs £55 for British Marine members and £65 for non-members, plus VAT where applicable.
