UK-based naval architecture firm Chartwell Marine is expanding into the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region and has appointed Fabien Lecuona to lead the new Singapore office.

The company, which recently appointed a new senior naval architect, says it aims to support ongoing and future build projects and expand its partnerships in the region. Earlier this year, Chartwell Marine, in partnership with Archipelago Yachts, Boat Electrics and Electronics (BEE) and Engineered Marine Systems (EMS), was awarded funding that will enable the progression of a methanol-powered low-carbon emission leisure vessel.

Lecuona has over 13 years of maritime experience in APAC, including in industries such as maritime electronics and engine manufacturing. In his new role, he will focus on business development, fostering industry collaborations and promoting Chartwell Marine’s vessel designs. In a statement, Chartwell Marine says it chose Singapore as its regional base due to the “country’s status as a leading global maritime hub, green commitments and business-friendly environment”.

“We’re very excited to announce our expansion into APAC with the launch of our new Singapore office,” says Andy Page, managing director of Chartwell Marine. “APAC is experiencing rapid economic growth, and we’ve seen a surge in demand for sustainable maritime solutions – especially from Southeast Asia.

“From our new Singapore base – headed by the highly experienced Fabien Lecuona – we will be able to provide a first-class service to our clients and build long-term partnerships that create a greener maritime industry in APAC.”

Lecuona adds: “Joining Chartwell Marine to spearhead its APAC expansion is incredibly exciting and the team is known throughout the maritime industry as a pioneer in vessel design. I look forward to working with the team to build upon this reputation and develop vessels that create a cleaner maritime industry and drive forward the renewable energy transition.”

Chartwell Marine has already secured demand in the APAC region, with six vessels ordered and two under construction. The firm says offshore wind leaders have shown interest in countries such as Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. Chartwell Marine says its vessels are designed to address specific challenges faced by the region’s maritime and offshore wind sectors, and can be built locally using regional resources and personnel.
