Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG), the US subsidiary of global shipbuilding giant Fincantieri, has named George A. Moutafis as its new CEO, effective 1 July 2025.

The leadership change comes at a key moment for the US shipbuilding sector, as the incoming administration renews focus on bolstering domestic naval capabilities. Moutafis will head up the Italian shipbuilding company’s US arm. His appointment signals Fincantieri’s continued investment in the US market, with Moutafis bringing extensive experience in defence, naval production and international industrial transformation to the role.

In March 2025, MIN reported that the Italian shipbuilding company posted a net profit of €27m for the year ending 31 December 2024, compared to a net loss of €53m in 2023. Adjusted net profit amounted to €57m, an increase from the €7m net loss recorded in 2023.

Moutafis has over 25 years of executive experience across strategic planning, programme management, and industrial restructuring, spanning both the public and private sectors. He has held leadership roles in major defense and manufacturing organisations, most recently as chief operating officer and general manager of Beretta USA Corp. He also previously held leadership roles within FMG, contributing to innovation and programme execution in support of US Navy platforms. His background in defense and naval manufacturing, alongside his operational expertise, aligns with the group’s strategic direction in response to shifting priorities in the broader US institutional and industrial context, the company says.

Fincantieri has been present in the United States for over 15 years. Over this period, the group has invested more than $800 million in its US shipbuilding operations, of which over half was specifically allocated to upgrading and expanding the Marinette yard in Wisconsin.
