ICOMIA podcast: Matt Anzardo on AkzoNobel’s leadership in yacht coatings, sustainability & industry collaboration
The yacht coatings industry, while niche, plays a critical role in both environmental stewardship and global maritime economies. AkzoNobel, a dominant player in the space, is actively leading innovation, regulatory engagement, and industry-wide collaboration to ensure the sector remains sustainable, high-performing, and professional.
Here Ben Taylor discusses regulation as a catalyst for innovation. He’s joined by Matt Anzardo who worked as the global segment manager for AkzoNobel in a career which spanned 22+ years.
AkzoNobel has been at the forefront of adapting to increasingly strict global regulations — particularly around biocides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and raw material classifications. Rather than view these constraints as obstacles, the company uses them to drive product development. Examples include the Awlgrip HDT line with low VOC emissions and B-Free biocide-free antifouling coatings. These innovations don’t just meet compliance — they aim to outperform traditional solutions, says Anzardo.
AkzoNobel’s long-standing relationship with ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industry Associations) demonstrates the power of unified industry voices. By participating in ICOMIA subcommittees — including those focused on biocides, applicators, and marinas — the company ensures knowledge sharing across competitors and stakeholders. This collaboration accelerates industry alignment on standards, compliance, and customer education, while also giving regulators practical, informed feedback.
Recognising the skilled labour gap, AkzoNobel has invested in regional Yacht Application Centres, most recently in Asia Pacific. These centres provide hands-on training for applicators and shipyards, helping raise industry standards globally. Tools like the Paint Colour Guide and training on ceramic coatings are part of broader efforts to elevate craftsmanship and reduce rework, waste, and cost.
AkzoNobel’s integrated approach — bridging regulation, innovation, and collaboration — demonstrates how even legacy industries can transform under pressure and lead with purpose. The company’s emphasis on environmental responsibility, education, and shared industry goals sets a blueprint for others navigating highly specialised, evolving markets.
