IEMA to open new headquarters in Barcelona in 2025

US-based non-profit the International Electric Marine Association (IEMA) has confirmed plans to set up its new headquarters in Barcelona, effective from January 2025. The IEMA board of directors approved this decision, citing Barcelona’s strategic position within the European Union’s maritime sector, its proximity to international regulatory bodies such as the International Marine Organization (IMO) and the International Standardization Organization (ISO), and its established role as a global leader, particularly through the Port of Barcelona, a major public infrastructure hub.

The IEMA is an industry-backed association advocating for national and international policies to promote zero-emission throughout the recreational, service, public transportation, and maritime freight sectors by 2050.

IEMA, which was launched at Monco Yacht Show in 2023, will maintain its presence through regional representatives across four continents, with intentions to open full-time offices in the United States, European Union, China and the South Pacific.

Since its inception in September 2023, IEMA has expanded rapidly within the electric marine industry, attracting over 80 members globally. These members consist of commercial and recreational entities such as Torqeedo-Yamaha, Honda R&D, Genevos, and Navalt, alongside infrastructure providers like the Port of Barcelona; shore power solutions specialist Kempower; electric outboard motor manufacturer ePropulsion; drivetrain producer Vita Power; and battery technology companies CATL and Kreisel. The new Barcelona office will coordinate IEMA’s global activities, concentrating on membership services, project management, events, and partnerships.

“Barcelona is a worldwide port and a global brand, with an unequivocal commitment to decarbonisation,” says Adria Jover, president of IEMA (pictured left). “We believe IEMA will have the best platform to fully develop its potential and address its international agenda.”

Lluís Salvadó, president of the Port of Barcelona, adds: “Our commitment to maritime decarbonisation through relevant investments is very strong. IEMA’s landing in Barcelona is great news for the innovative electric marine ecosystem.”

Jordi Valls, fourth deputy mayor for economy, finance, economic promotion and tourism of Barcelona City Council, emphasises the role of infrastructure in advancing electric boating. “We celebrate to host global projects that make the sea an economic engine of innovation and sustainability, strengthening Barcelona’s role as the capital of the Blue Economy,” Valls says.

IEMA has several initiatives planned for 2024 and 2025. This includes publishing its first market sales indicators for the recreational sector by the end of 2024, followed by the commercial sector indicators in the second quarter of 2025. IEMA says it also plans to participate in numerous industry events and initiatives aimed at fostering growth in the electric marine sector.
