Mercury supports skilled trades training with scholarships
Mercury Racing, the high-performance division of Mercury Marine, has awarded three scholarships intended to support students in the US pursuing a career in skilled trades.
“Mercury Racing relies on skilled tradespeople in every aspect of our business, from testing and manufacturing engines, drives and propellers to the installation and maintenance of our products at the network of Mercury Racing authorised dealerships,” says Mercury Racing’s general manager, Stuart Halley.
“Through these scholarships, we are making an investment in the future of these students and in the future of the marine industry.”
The Excellence in Trade Scholarship
For the fifth year, Mercury Racing has funded the US$5,000 Excellence in Trade Scholarship for a high school senior from the Fond du Lac area of Wisconsin planning to pursue a trade education. The 2023 scholarship was awarded to Owen Binkelman from Lomira High School, who is now pursuing a career in Electrical Power Distribution at Moraine Park Technical College.
Binkelman says: “This scholarship means a lot to me, especially when it can pay for almost my entire college tuition. It feels extremely satisfying to win this scholarship, knowing that I’ve achieved something I could only dream of.”
Impact Institute Education Scholarship
For 2023 Mercury Racing created two $1,500 scholarships for high school students enrolled in the Marine Services Technology programme at Impact Institute, a vocational career training centre located in Kendallville, Indiana. Mercury Marine partners with the programme, providing engines for testing, parts, and training materials.
The 2023 Impact Institute Education scholarships have been awarded to Mackenzie Porin of Fremont High School and Carter Murphy of East Noble High School.
“It feels amazing to win this scholarship and is truly an honour,” says Porin. “The scholarship will really help me to take a step forward in my career as a mechanic and to push myself to get better every day and see what else I can accomplish.”
