Queensland marina reveals multi-million dollar development

Sandstone Point Marina

A Queensland marina has revealed further details of its plans for an extensive upgrade and the introduction of a new name: Sandstone Point Marina, replacing the previous name of Spinnaker Sound Marina, which was established over 40 years ago.

The proposed changes to the dock and boat ramp areas aim to provide ‘refreshed amenities’ for both locals and visitors. Among the planned improvements are a large waterside deck with extensive outdoor seating and new landscaping designed to enhance the environment.

Development group Ignite Projects is in the process of acquiring the marina, including the marine lease for the 150 berths and the associated landholdings.

The marina’s redevelopment will also coincide with the construction of a new waterfront apartment complex, with 66 apartments across two buildings, which will be located on the current dry stack storage facility site. Marina users will lose the dry stack and lifting facilities, a decision that has caused some consternation among boat owners, with many voicing their disappointment on the marina’s Facebook page.

Sandstone Point operators have confirmed there will be no change to berthing fees.

Ignite projects director Josh Foote says the planned upgrade will revitalise the marina precinct, creating a more appealing waterfront space and new facilities for the local community. “This upgrade and new name is a natural progression for the marina, alongside other new developments and planned infrastructure improvements, such as the Bribie bridge duplication and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road widening,” he says.

Foote adds: “We will be retaining the 150 berths with no changes, and the current fuel dock will also remain in place. While we understand that the loss of the dry stack and lifting facilities may cause some inconvenience for marina users, this is an opportunity to enhance the marina experience for the whole community.”

In 2024, Ignite held a series of consultations with residents and boat owners, who gave feedback on early plans. Plans for a boat-based fish and chip restaurant and a man-made beach were met with mixed reactions, and those ideas were withdrawn.
