RNLI partners with Raymarine to upgrade lifeboat navigation systems

The RNLI has entered into a five-year strategic partnership with Raymarine, introducing advanced navigation and thermal imaging technology across elements of its lifeboat fleet.

The collaboration will see the integration of next-generation digital navigation systems designed to improve situational awareness, operational efficiency and the long-term stability of the RNLI’s lifesaving capabilities.

It forms part of the RNLI’s wider fleet strategy to ensure its lifeboats remain future-ready and equipped to meet changing demands along the UK and Ireland’s coastline. The project will initially focus on introducing Raymarine navigation and digital switching systems, alongside trials of Teledyne FLIR Marine thermal imaging technology.

RNLI volunteer crews provided feedback on tech selection

The upgraded systems will include Teledyne Raymarine electronic chart systems (ECS), based on its Axiom chartplotter platform, and Quantum and Cyclone Pro radar systems, as well as YachtSense ship control technology. The technology was selected following extensive consultation with RNLI volunteer crews, who provided feedback on the operational requirements of future onboard systems and training and support to maximise their use.

The introduction of Teledyne FLIR Marine thermal imaging cameras will further enhance crew capabilities by helping detect vessels and people in the water in challenging conditions, including darkness, reduced visibility and fog.

Among the first in the fleet to receive the new digital systems, will be the Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat and the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat will be upgraded. The E-class lifeboats operating on the River Thames are also set to get the upgrades before the remainder of the RNLI fleet.

RNLI chief engineer and technical director, Ross Barraclough, says: “We’re delighted to be working with Teledyne Raymarine and FLIR Marine to provide our volunteers with a state-of-the-art lifeboat electronics system. The new system will give our crews improved situational awareness, a simplified method of operation and a digital platform that can adapt as new technologies emerge.”

RNLI remains agile by adopting innovation

He adds that using commercially available technology would allow the charity to remain agile and continue adopting emerging innovations, while providing crews with advanced navigation capabilities.

Gregoire Outters (who was appointed president at Teledyne Marine Group in April), says: “We are honoured to support the RNLI in their vital mission. Our technology is designed to perform in the most demanding marine environments, and we are proud that it will play a role in helping RNLI crews save lives at sea.”

As well as supplying the technology, Teledyne Raymarine and Teledyne FLIR Marine will support the lifesaving charity through technical assistance, events and marine safety awareness initiatives.
