Rolls-Royce and Sanlorenzo extend mtu engine contract
Rolls-Royce and yacht builder Sanlorenzo have signed a framework agreement to continue their collaboration through the supply of mtu propulsion, automation and exhaust aftertreatment systems until the end of 2028.
The contract includes mtu Series 2000 and Series 4000 engines, which will be installed in more than ten Sanlorenzo yacht models.
Sanlorenzo has utilised mtu engines for decades. Recent decarbonisation developments for the Italian boating giant in 2024 include the delivery of the 50Steel superyacht equipped with a hydrogen-powered fuel cell system, and hydrogen-powered Bluegame BGH tenders used as chase boats at the America’s Cup.
Denise Kurtulus, senior vice president global marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, says: “We are delighted that Sanlorenzo continues to rely on our mtu engines. Yacht operators benefit from their power, reliability and fuel efficiency, as well as from our worldwide service network.”
Sanlorenzo will integrate mtu Series 2000 and Series 4000 engines into various yacht models, including the Alloy 44/48 and 1150 EXP, as well as the Steel, which reaches up to 74 metres in length. All mtu engines supplied are compatible with renewable diesel (HVO), and IMO-III-compliant propulsion systems with SCR (selective catalytic reduction) are optionally available.

Massimo Perotti, executive chairman of Sanlorenzo, says: “The yachting sector is living a phase of great technological innovation, especially for sustainability. Sanlorenzo has always been a pioneer in cutting-edge solutions … However, we are convinced that to [reach decarbonisation in the sector] it is essential to join forces with the entire supply chain, and to involve all the players in the sector to discuss and share common objectives.
“In this context, reliable and efficient engines will continue to be essential. That is why we continue to offer our customers mtu propulsion systems.”
The mtu Series 2000 engines are designed for small to medium vessels and cover power ranges from 452 kW to 1,939 kW. The Series 4000 engines are intended for larger vessels with higher power needs, from around 720 kW to 4,300 kW.
Rolls-Royce Power Systems states that its bridge-to-propeller strategy involves offering complete propulsion and control packages, including MTU engines, hybrid systems, pod drives, bridges and automation components.
Sanlorenzo’s operations span six shipyards and several business units, including Bluegame and Nautor Swan. It also acquired the Nautor Swan Group and distributor Simpson Marine in 2024.
