Rolls-Royce unveils mtu 2000 engine for fast yachts and commercial craft

Rolls-Royce has announced a new addition to its mtu Series 2000 engine line-up, introducing the 12-cylinder 12V2000 M96Z model.
The new engine is scheduled to be available from 2026 for use in fast yachts, patrol vessels, police boats and sportfishing craft.
The new 12V2000 M96Z delivers an increased output of 1,634kW (2,222 mhp), up from 1,472kW (2,002 mhp) in the preceding M96X model. According to Rolls-Royce, the rise in performance results from refinements to several components. Yet, despite the higher power rating, the firm says the new engine retains similar weight and dimensions to its predecessor.
The news comes as Rolls-Royce Power Systems reports record sales, profit and return on sales for the 2024 financial year. Underlying revenue increased by 11 per cent to €5.05bn (£4.27bn), exceeding the €5bn threshold for the first time. Adjusted operating profit rose by 40 per cent to €662m (£560m), while the return on sales reached 13.1 per cent, compared to 10.4 per cent in 2023.
“The new 12-cylinder version of the mtu Series 2000 engines stands for maximum performance, increased power density, and impressive acceleration — another milestone in our commitment to providing our customers with first-class propulsion solutions for demanding maritime applications,” says Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
“This continues the success story of the Series 2000 and develops it into a forward-looking platform for innovative, sustainable propulsion solutions. As a reliable partner, we support our customers in implementing their maritime projects in a powerful, efficient, and future-proof manner.”
The firm says the engine incorporates a turbocharger system designed to deliver strong acceleration while maintaining low exhaust emissions. Mechanical enhancements include a reinforced crankcase, upgraded cylinder heads and redesigned pistons, aimed at ensuring operational durability and performance consistency.
The 12V2000 M96Z is compatible with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a renewable diesel fuel, and is certified to IMO II and EPA Tier 3 recreational standards.
“Rolls-Royce Power Systems is further expanding its leading position in the international yacht market with its Bridge-to-Propeller strategy and its premium brand mtu. Our offer of a complete portfolio spanning the entire yacht powertrain — including state-of-the-art mtu engines, hybrid propulsion systems, pod drives, bridges, and automation systems — combined with a worldwide service offering, is unique in the market,” says Denise Kurtulus, senior vice president global marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
