Southern Wind develops 39m flagship SW120 sailing yacht concept

Southern Wind has developed its 39.39-metre flagship sailing yacht SW120 concept to now include a new Gran Turismo version, according to the Superyacht Times

The semi-custom bluewater performance SW120GT yacht has evolved from the fourth SW105 currently under construction and continues the successful collaboration of Southern Wind, Farr Yacht Design and Nauta Yachts. The structural engineering of the new concept was devised by Gurit UK Ltd.

There are three deck configurations on offer – Raised Saloon, Deck Saloon and Gran Turismo.  The versatile platform has been designed to meet the requirements of long-range cruising, bucket racing or chartering. Features of the design include a carbon fibre coach roof with skylight, ability to sail with a limited crew and a selection of multi-purpose interior arrangements to allow for a full-beam master cabin aft with direct access to the stern cockpit.

“In each of these configurations, the central cockpit is the living heart of the yacht, fitted with convertible tables for comfortable al fresco dining, well separated from the manoeuvring area by large sunbeds making for a welcoming open-air lounging area,” says Massimo Gino from Nauta.

The SW120 will be constructed in Corecell composite sandwich, with Nomex and pre-preg also used in certain areas, depending on the weight targets, reports the Superyacht Times. Jim Schmicker, vice president of Farr Yacht Design explains: “The Southern Wind 120 is propelled to impressive light wind performance by the combination of a lifting keel, with a draft range of 3.8 to 6 metres, and a very manageable amount of sail area. The lightship displacement of only 94.5 tons is a result of Southern Wind Shipyard’s unrelenting commitment to light-weight construction. There are a wide range of possibilities for the choice of keel type, including fixed and telescopic, and complementary rig size.”
