U-Boat Worx launches turnkey wet lease model for submersible operations
U-Boat Worx has signed its first contract under a new wet lease model that allows commercial operators to offer deep-sea dives without the cost or complexity of owning and running a submersible after announcing the possibility of such an arrangement in May this year.
The new approach provides a fully managed solution, bundling a manned submersible, experienced crew, insurance, servicing, and logistics into the package. Earlier this year the company announced a new CEO — Wilbert Versteeg — as it introduced a new organisational structure comprising three core divisions: UBW Exploration, UBW Components and UBW Naval. The idea was to support its expansion into a wider range of markets.
According to commercial director Wilbert Beilsma, the wet lease model’s aim is to remove long-standing barriers to underwater operations. “By eliminating the traditional barriers of cost, complexity, and compliance, our wet lease model allows more operators to bring the magic of the deep sea to their guests,” he says. “Whether for marine tourism, education, or conservation, this is a game-changer for ocean access.”
The first contract is for a one-year global deployment of the company’s Cruise Sub 7, which seats seven passengers. It includes a set number of dive days, and U-Boat Worx will provide the crew (pilot and survey officer), alongside all operational planning and regulatory compliance.
Minimum lease terms are three months, with flexible dive-day packages and models available. Pricing starts at €50,000 (around $60,000) per month on multi-year contracts, with shorter durations available at a premium. Longer agreements represent the most cost-effective approach. Whether these numbers help Beilsma’s aim of ‘eliminating the tractional barriers of cost” is up for lively debate.

The wet lease covers all operational elements, distinguishing it from traditional dry lease models where clients are responsible for staffing and technical operations. The program is designed to serve cruise lines, superyacht operators, resorts, expedition companies and event organisers looking to offer submersible experiences without long-term ownership.
Clients can choose from U-Boat Worx’s wider fleet, including the Nemo, Super Yacht Sub, and Cruise Sub 7.
With more than 60 submersibles built and 10,000+ successful dives, U-Boat Worx says it has long supported science, conservation and luxury tourism. The company’s new leasing model signals a shift toward more flexible access to deep-sea exploration.
